about

I’ve changed my guitar strings more in the past two years than I have in my 15+ years of playing guitar. I’m more of the let it rust and then I’ll change ‘em. Well the midwest is humid. Really humid. So humid that on the first day of grad school orientation I walked to campus (about a 20 minute walk) and was drenched through my shirt even after wiping myself down and fanning myself in the bathroom, and I had to apologize to everyone around me that I’m not normally someone who likes to wear long sleeve red oxfords in the summer without an undershirt and now has sweat splotches throughout my shirt, as if I’m trying to re-imaging what a cow print can look like with sweat and sweat alone (if you’re grossed out by this, trust me my embarrassment was tenfold whatever you’re feeling). But it’s humid in the midwest. And that was a surprise. Which meant changing my strings more often than I had previously. But there are also thunderstorms. Something I didn’t realize I had missed as much as I did when living in the pacific northwest. Drizzle is fine (and I love grey days), but when we first heard thunder after moving to the midwest I teared up a bit.

While in grad school I restrung my banjo and have played my acoustic more than I did in Oregon, and once you add an electric bass you’ve got yourself a little string band (not really).

These songs are folky, more acoustic-ey, and have a bit of twang and jangle at times. They are the small moments that I forced myself to read for pleasure on the porch or in the backyard or go for a walk when the sun is out. Moments of joy to slow down and enjoy the day (even though I’d end up with sunburned knees 97% of the time I did this). These brought me me a lot of joy and I hope they bring you joy too.
